The High School Summer Programs at the Lab are rigorous, academically-intensive, week-long units offered to driven learners seeking to gain experience in discussion and writing-heavy coursework.
The morning Literature classes, 9:00-12:00, focus on literary analysis. Students will receive targeted instruction about annotation, outlining, and drafting papers examining works of literature ranging from poetry to short stories to novels. Readings will be assigned and completed independently or with home support before Monday class begins. Students will engage in 2-3 Socratic seminars for which they will receive direct guidance. The afternoon Mathematics classes, 13:00-15:00, for Weeks 1 to 3 will consist of a review of middle school topics and extension into high school topics. Students will be able to join both lower and higher-level lectures, but will be focusing on completing individual assignments that will be submitted the night before each class. Due to the rigorous nature of this program, we highly suggest that student not be enrolled in many additional evening activities, especially those of an academic nature. Students in past programs have reported nightly homework of 3-4 hours for the Literature class. We predict and additional hour of homework for mathematics. |
